Geo-Workshops

Geo-workshops were originally conceived as a tool providing support for GIS trainings given by HREV in Quibdó (in Chocó, Colombia) and Panama City (Panama).  The aim of both trainings was to create a core group, or at the very least a dynamic, for using GIS and mapping in the defence of territory.

The target users of this tool were members of communities in resistance or related organisations associated with the two observatories for human rights and territory which HREV is involved with:  The Observatory for the Pacific and Territory (OPT) in Colombia, and Panama’s Environmental and Social Information System (ESIS).

After experiencing adverse and unexpected situations, interesting and complex apprenticeships, annoying impasses and long delays, HREV is taking ESIS up again and is pushing to make sure that things accelerate and that the OPT moves to its public awareness phase.  And what about Geo-Workshops?

Geo-Workshops did not work in the way that it had been conceived, or rather it did not serve the aims originally established for it, but it took on a life of its own. This website simply found its users or, even better, was found by users who have found something of value in its entries and pages.

The site – the tool – is in the process of being modified so that it can provide a support service for the fresh round of trainings (in the form of a Diploma) taking place in Colombia’s Pacific region, as well as providing a support service for the OPT and ESIS.  We also hope to continue being useful to everyone who has visited the site in the last few months.

While we are modifying the site and implementing our new plans, you can visit the space here (Geo-workshops).
