Central American Voices for free communication
Central American Voices for Free Communication is an initiative promoted by Human Rights Everywhere, Lac and the Costa Rican organisations Solidarity Confederation (Confederación Solidaridad) and the Pabrú Présberi Centre for Alternative Action (Centro de Acción Alternativa Pabrú Présberi) with the support of the University of Costa Rica through its Programme on freedom of expression, the right to information and public opinion (Proledi).
The aim of this event is to strengthen networking among activist-journalists throughout the region and discuss possible methods, language and strategies for working during these times of militarization and harassment which we are currently faced with and which we suspect may become worse.
The event aims on the one hand, to strengthen our bonds of brotherhood and cooperation and, on the other, to visibilize as much as possible the different struggles currently being strengthened with the help of free communication in Central America and beyond. The public talk will be broadcast live via the Internet and will connect with the largest possible number of free media in the continent.
The event is divided into two spaces:
FIRST SPACE
* Finding our voices / 8am-12 noon
A meeting between journalists from Central American organisations, with broad participation from representatives of Costa Rican organisations and from other countries in the region.
The morning’s work will help us understand the strategies being used in each organisation and build alliances and networks to improve freedom of expression and political participation in the region.
* Articulating our voices / 2 pm-4pm
Submission of proposals from Costa Rican and Central American social activists for the defense of the rights of freedom of expression, press and information. Collective construction of a basic outline of activities to be achieved among the participating organisations for the exercise of their rights to expression, press and information, using their own skills and taking advantage of this network to set up practical links.
SECOND SPACE – Public talk / 5 pm
The afternoon session will consist of a talk or roundtable with the participation of 4 panelists.
