The study on the impacts of the oil and gas industry megaproject on Colombia‘s indigenous territories is now available electronically (via pdf).
It is clear that this is not simply an economic problem. The arrival of the oil and gas companies brought with it the invasion of territories and violation of land rights, cultural weakening of communities, armed violence by the army and the illegal armed groups, and food insecurity.....
Colombia’s indigenous peoples have been forced to resist and fight against the brutal impact of oil and gas exploitation. But the worst is yet to come. If the Colombian government‘s and the industry‘s forecasts of hydrocarbon exploration and production become a reality, 42 indigenous peoples and 358 of their resguardos (territories with legal title recognized by the State) will suffer the effects of this megaproject.
An awareness of the recent history of the oil industry’s impact on indigenous territories, together with that of forecasts of future exploration and production, is essential if indigenous peoples are to be able to design strategies for resistance.
These are the two focuses of this study which forms part of Desecrated Land 2.
